Secular Music...to Listen or Not to Listen

Updated: Mar 31

One of the questions I get asked a lot pertains to listening to secular music as a Christian, or as church folk call it "worldly music". There's a lot of debate around what's OK and what's not...some will argue that as long as there is no profanity it's ok. My perspective is simple...Mark 4:24 tells us to "Pay close attention to what you hear". Is listening to a song about sex or lust better than listening to a trap song glorifying selling drugs and murder? Ask yourself one question...would God be pleased with the words I'm singing or hearing on repetition that are soaking into my spirit? A better question is, does this glorify the Lord and honor Him? What many people, including Christians sadly, fail to realize is that music is very powerful. Let me say it louder for the people in the back...MUSIC IS POWERFUL! Colossians 3:16 encourages us to let the message of Christ dwell in our hearts through songs, hymns, and spiritual songs. If what you're listening to is not representing Christ or His word, what dwells in your heart is not aligned with the word of God. Now don't get me wrong, the Bible does not say anything specifically about listening to secular music, however the Bible does provide us with instructions on living a godly life that is pleasing to Him. Much of the secular music today does not follow the standard of Philippians 4:8. If what you listen to glorifies what opposes our Heavenly Father you shouldn't listen to it. Plain and simple. Are some of the melodies fire? Yep. Are some of the hooks catchy? Absolutely. Be mindful of the content. Before you know it you've added a song to your playlist that doesn't have profanity but you didn't pay attention that the lyrics talk about making deals with the devil. Come on now, as children of the King we know that is something that's not pleasing to the Lord.

Before becoming saved, and even as a "newbie" Christian I was still listening to a lot of secular music...and trust that ya girl loves to dance! As I began to spend more time in God's word I began to realize how ungodly music was having such a negative impact in my walk with God. Since we belong to the most High, we must be careful of what we watch (eyes), what we hear (ears), and what comes from our mouth (speak). With so many genres of Christian music today, you can still get your lean on while giving thanks to the Lord. So the next time you start your playlist and turn your speakers up, ask yourself is what your allowing into your spirit giving glory to the Lord, then you'll know just what to do.
